A Methodology for Measuring Potential Benefits from Drought-Oriented Research in Nebraska AgEcon
Leholm, Arlen G.; Supalla, Raymond J.; Vollmar, Glen.
The growth in agricultural productivity and significance of science and technology in contributing to this growth has been well documented by Bredahl, Cline, Evenson (1967), Griliches (1964), and Peterson. The results of these studies generally indicate that over the past several decades, investment in agricultural research has paid off with relatively high rates of return. Most of this previous work, however, has been directed at estimating returns to aggregate agricultural research in an ex post sense at the national level and does not address the question of potential future returns to research at a state or regional level (Norton). Thus, a particular need exists to develop a methodology for evaluating the potential returns to specific types of...

A Model for the Early Evolution of the Gulf of Mexico Basin ArchiMer
Buffler, R T; Shaub, F J; Huerta, R; Ibrahim, Abk; Watkins, J S.
Seismic data from the deep Gulf of Mexico basin indicate: 1) inferred ocenaic crust in the deep central Gulf (5 to 6 km thick; 6.8 to 7.1 km/sec.) is flanked symmetrically on the north and south by inferred transitional crust (8 to 15 km thick; 6.4 to 6.8 km/sec.); 2) acoustic basement seen on the reflection data in the central Gulf is an irregular reflector and probably represents the top of an oceanic volcanic (basaltic) layer (layer 2); 3) northof the Campeche Escar pment the top of transitional crust is represented by a strong, smooth reflector/unconformity that truncates rift basins and is onlapped by a thick salt and sedimentary section; 4) in the southeastern Gulf transitional crust consists of tilted basement blocks probably representing a thinned...

A new genus of arboreal rat from West Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Musser, G.G..
Kadarsanomys nov. gen. is proposed for Rattus sodyi Bartels, 1937, and contrasted with Rattus and Lenothrix, two genera with which sodyi has been closely connected in the past. Kadarsanomys sodyi is an arboreal rat associated with bamboo on the forested volcanoes of West Java. Kadarsanomys has no close relatives and is the only murid genus endemic to a single island on the Sunda Shelf. Kadarsanomys, Pithecheir and Lenothrix comprise the only endemic genera of Sundaic murids.

A new Harpacticoid from phreatic waters of Morocco, and remarks on the genus Praeleptomesochra Lang (Crustacea Copepoda: Ameiridae) (Researches in Africa by the Zoological Institute of L’Aquila. VII) Naturalis
Pesce, Giuseppe Lucio.
Praeleptomesochra phreatica n.sp., an harpacticoid copepod from phreatic waters of Morocco is described. Since the new species shows some differences in comparison to the preliminary diagnosis of Praeleptomesochra by Lang (1965), the genus is emended. A key to the species of Praeleptomesochra is provided.

A new species of Sporothrix from Kuwait Naturalis
Moustafa, A.F..
During an ecological study of fungi of the tidal mudflats in Kuwait, a Sporothrix species has been recorded twice, in 1977 and 1980. It differs from other species of the genus (de Hoog, 1974, 1978) in several characters and is here described as a new species. A comparison with similar species of the genus is added.

Schmid, Rudolf.
Thirty pre-1975 and 22 post-1974 collections of Epacridaceae from New Caledonia are added to the exsiccatae in Virot’s 1975 revision of New Caledonian Epacridaceae. A collection of Styphelia cordifolia purported to be New Caledonian is shown to be of Australian origin.

A note on stomatal types and crystals in the leaves of Melastomataceae Naturalis
Baas, P..
Original data on leaf crystals and stomatal types in 25 genera of Melastomataceae are presented, and discussed with reference to the classification of the family as modified by Van Vliet et al. (1981, this issue). The heterogeneity of the abolished subfamily Astronioideae is confirmed and a separation of Pternandra from the Astronieae is also justified on the basis of leaf anatomical data. The Astronieae are characterized by large styloids and predominantly anomocytic stomata; this combination of characters also occurs in part of the Melastomatoideae (especially the Miconieae). Most other Melastomatoideae are characterized by polocytic to diacytic stomata and druses. The subfamilies Memecyloideae and Crypteronioideae remain rather heterogeneous leaf...

A Note on the Attitudes of Retailers to Beef Carcass Classification AgEcon
Wilson, T.D.; Wissemann, A.F..
The benefits of an objective method of describing beef carcasses are being investigated through trials at several Australian abattoirs. This paper reports the results of an attitudinal study carried out with the beef retailers who trade with one of these abattoirs. Most retailers surveyed were receptive to the idea of an objective classification system and felt that it would be useful to them in carcass trading. However, other findings raised doubts about the ability of the system being trialed to meet their requirements. The results had a number of implications for the planning of specific aspects of this classification trial.

A Note on the Effects of Non-Transferable Quotas on Supply Functions AgEcon
Alston, Julian M..
Marketing systems using non-transferable or imperfectly transferable quotas induce shifts in supply as well as shifts along supply functions. There are social costs associated with these shifts which are additional to those normally recognised in the literature. To reduce the size of the shifts in supply and the social costs, quotas should he efficiently transferable.

A numerical study of turbulent processes in the marine upper layers ArchiMer
Klein, Patrice; Coantic, Michel.
A second-order turbulence closure model, similar to Mellor and Yamada's (1974) level-3 model, is implemented. This is used to investigate the role of the different turbulent processes and the resulting dynamical and thermal structures, for oceanic upper layers subjected to a variety of unsteady atmospheric forcings. From the distributions obtained for current and temperature, turbulence levels, the production, transfer and dissipation terms in the turbulent kinetic energy and temperature variance budgets, the physics of the oceanic mixed layer and thermocline can be discussed and comparisons made with the models of Mellor and Durbin (1975), Warn-Varnas and Piacsek (1979) and Kundu (1980) and some experimental data. Most often, shear production and viscous...
